Supporting balance and lasting change

Supporting balance and lasting change

At the heart of Paul’s work is the therapeutic relationship with his clients. Built on trust, openness, and confidentiality, it offers a space where you can speak freely and feel truly heard.

Drawing on both lived experience and trainings in Integrative Counselling and NLP, Paul’s approach is thoughtful and attentive. Listening deeply, with curiosity and care, he works alongside you to explore what matters, gently supporting a move towards understanding and change.

"I have always been impressed by Paul's natural instinct to connect with and listen to people in distress or facing life changing circumstances."

Balance

Developing an awareness of ourselves as made up of many parts and becoming curious about which part we are currently experiencing allows for a progression towards greater inner balance and stability - where all parts can be welcomed.

Practicing Pauses

Routines can structure our lives and ground us in the present. Repetition may offer essential stability during trying times. Checking in with ourselves in the same place or at the same moment every day can highlight the way in which we are constantly changing. Offering awareness as well as hope.

Noticing Beauty

Becoming aware of and taking time to notice the beauty of nature can instil a sense of wonder at the world we live in and appreciation of our place within it. Birdsong, flowers, clouds and blue sky, water, trees, the sound of rain…. there is so much for us to marvel at.

Nourishing Yourself

As in a productive garden, the work we do on ourselves has the potential to reward and nourish us. We become more resilient and better prepared for future times when we feel that there is little on our table.

Enjoying The Seasons

As we watch the passing seasons, we can notice the qualities they bring to the natural landscape. Beauty even within cold, wet months, the surge of new life in spring, the heat and comfort of a warm summer and the fruitfulness of autumn. This can serve as a reminder of how our inner landscape can change and need not remain stuck.

Rituals offer moments of peace as we focus on the small things. Time to simply pause and enjoy a treat, a comfort or a small gift to oneself has the potential to enrich our day.

Being Kind to Yourself

As we release ourselves from old patterns and behaviours into new and kinder feelings, long held traumas become tolerable memories and overload becomes balance. New life too emerges from what once felt like injury and decay.

Cultivating the conditions for change

For over 30 years, Paul’s work as a garden designer has been rooted in close creative collaboration with people and the land around their homes. Watching seasons shift, times of growth, of stillness, of quiet renewal, has deepened his understanding of how change unfolds. Working with depleted or overgrown soil, he learned to look beneath the surface.

Paul’s counselling follows a similar path. Unearthing patterns, thoughts, and feelings that may have taken hold over time and which no longer serve us. A gentle and courageous process of exploring what lies within emotions that we find troubling and challenging.

Counselling helps us unearth the reasons for our current lack of flourishing. Through understanding and attention, it opens space for healing, acceptance, and new growth.

Insights and ideas to inspire

Carl Jung’s ‘autobiography’, a fascinating record of the pivotal moments, memories and dreams in the life of one of our greatest psychiatrists and psychoanalysts. A pioneer and a maverick who believed that the individual and their story – including their ‘shadow’ - is a key part of the therapeutic journey – a foundational part of modern psychiatry and psychoanalysis.

Theory in Therapy

Theory in Therapy

A resourced approach to personal transformation

As an Integrative Counsellor Paul uses various theories and modalities in his work. Each of us is unique and so the resources drawn on in sessions are specific to the individual.

Person Centered Counselling sees you the client as the expert, with Paul being your guide and facilitator. This is non-directive with no fixed format. You choose what to discuss.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy offers tools with which to challenge limiting beliefs, unhelpful behaviours and patterns of thinking. It offers practical skills to reduce anxiety and overcome depression by developing positive thought and behaviour cycles.

Gestalt brings us into the ‘here and now’ so that we can notice how our history, thoughts, bodily sensations and emotions determine our experience of the present moment. Observing details such as breathing patterns, posture, facial expression, movement, tone of voice and exploring the emotions that these might be linked to helps to create an understanding of the feelings within – as they are experienced rather simply as something to be discussed. The resulting awareness helps in moving towards closure and personal growth.

Internal Family Systems explores the many ‘parts’ that make up our core self. It proposes that all our ‘parts’ are doing their best to serve us and keep us safe. From this compassionate viewpoint it helps to heal wounded ‘parts’, transforming challenging and extreme behaviours and roles into healthy and supportive ones.

Paul works to the ethical standards of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society’ s Code of Ethics.
